| Founded in 1845,
when the first diamond prospectors settled in the region, Lençóis
was quickly raised to the category of town in 1864, due to the economical
potential of the region. The city was named Lençóis (which means
sheet, in Portuguese) because of the roof of the tents put up by
the prospectors next to the river, that looked like enormous tents
when they were saw far away. Classified as Historical city by the
National Historic and Cultural Institute, Lençóis is characterised
by preserved buildings built in neogothic style in the colonial
period, narrow streets paved with bricks, colourful houses and quaint
public illumination. |
